Högsby - a cultural district

Högsby in the beautiful valley, Emådalen, is a place with a fascinating history....

When the Danes invaded it early in the 17th century, the inhabitants fled to the dark forests of Småland and for a time the lovely church by the river Emån was used as a stable for the Danes´ horses. There is still an atmosphere of bygone days in the main street (Storgatan) with its small shops and picturesque old wooden houses, and the waters if the river reflect fine buildings such as the historic church, and that many consider is the handsomest Municipal Hall in Sweden.

There is much to see on a journey back into the past: Långemåla with Early iron Age graves, Svindla Kvarn (watermill), Near Böta Kvarn (watermill), one of Sweden's northernmost stands of beech trees growing wild. Bötterums gästgiveri, this 18th century inn is now a unique folklore museum.

Adults and children alike will enjoy a visit to the Glass Museum in Björkshult and the beautiful school museum in Skälsbäck. The mistletoe growing in Högsby is very famous. It is a rare, protected plant, parasitic on trees.

 

Water land - magical wilderness

The experience of sitting on e jetty angling or casting for pike is something one never forgets. A chance to glide through the water in a canoe or bathe in the beautiful lake is what we would like to offer you.

Allgunnen is one of the biggest lakes in Småland. Plenty of fish to catch. The Big and Little Sinner lakes are of national interest for nature conservation in Sweden. The common loon bred in this lakes. The river Alsterån is one of the country`s most important watercourses. The river Emån has been a source of life, beauty and income for the district.
More Kastell, a part of the lovely Moredalen, is a fascinating ravine with an unusual and rich growth of mosses and lichens. Excursions to Aboda Klint with its magnificent view of miles of forest and glittering lakes are popular all year round. Refreshments are available at the lodge at the top of Klinten, a hill that rises 50 metres above Lake Kleven.

Fishing licence for tourists in Högsby

The fishing licence for tourists entitles you to fish for one or two
weeks in 29 lakes and rivers which you find in the wonderful nature
in the municipality of Högsby. Fishing waters which are situated in
the beautiful Emåvalley near Högsby or embedded in the magic
wilderness mainly around the villages Allgunnen, Grönskåra and
Fagerhult. The lakes and rivers are rich in pike, perch, pike-perch,
bream, tench and a number of other species.
On the map (included in price) you can see what fishing waters are
covered by this tourist licence. The places for selling are marked
with numbers referring to the address list which can be found on
the back page of this folder.

With the fishing licence comes a folder containing extensive
information on the accessible waters like: - Good fishing spots
and the species of fish to be found there – Maps showing the
depth of the lakes -  Boats for hire – Key maps with driving
directions – Destinations, objects of interest and housing facilities
close to the fishing waters. 

Fishing licences for tourists are available from May to September.

The land of the gnomes

According to tradition there have always been many gnomes, hobgoblins, sirens of the woods and other creatures in this part of the world. They could be dangerous and cause much truble. Long ago, a man called Ludde in Soläng was out hunting caperacaillie when he heard a child crying. The sound seemed to come from inside a hill, Hälleklint in Fagerhult, so he lay on the ground to listen. The next thing he knew, he was inside the hill, surrounded by small creatures wearing grey clothes and red knitted hats. They kept him for seven years. He married one of the girl gnomes and had four sons by her. Eventually he managed to break the spell. Ludde soon got married again to a logical girl and they lives happily together for many years. But whenever his wife baked a bread, Ludde laid four small loaves outside the front door. They were for the four boys he had in Hällaklint, he used to say.
